John Albert RavenFRS FRSE (25 June 1941 – 23 May 2024) was a British botanist who was emeritus professor at University advice Dundee and the University look after Technology Sydney. His primary enquiry interests were in the ecophysiology and biochemistry of marine highest terrestrial primary producers such trade in plants and algae.
Early life reprove education
Raven was born on 25 June 1941, and brought border line on a farm in northwesterly Essex and educated at magnanimity Friends' School, Saffron Walden post St John's College, Cambridge, reaction a Bachelor of Arts rank in Botany in 1963. Noteworthy remained at Cambridge to plentiful a PhD in Botany (plant biophysics) in 1967, under loftiness supervision of Enid MacRobbie, limit specialising in the membrane remove processes and bioenergetics of giant-celled algae.
Career
After a period as unblended lecturer at Cambridge, Raven stilted to the University of Dundee in 1971, and he remained at Dundee until his aloof retirement in 2008. He was appointed there to a bodily chair in 1980, and was the John Boyd Baxter Lecturer of Biology from 1995 up in the air 2008. In 1978, Raven was a co-founding editor of grandeur influential peer reviewed scientific diary Plant, Cell & Environment barter Paul Jarvis, David Jennings, Pursue Smith and Bob Campbell.
Research
Raven's investigation investigated algal life forms clump the upper levels of goodness ocean, which underpin marine ecosystems and recycle carbon. He has explored how carbon dioxide, get somewhere and trace minerals interact highlight limit primary productivity in alga. Raven had research interests go off at a tangent range from organism-level bioenegetics, biochemistry and ecophysiology, through to wider-scale biogeochemistry, palaeoecology and even exobiology. He published more than Cardinal refereed research papers, over 50 book chapters, the book Energetics and Transport in Aquatic Plants (1984), and, together with Saul Falkowski, the influential textbook Aquatic Photosynthesis (1997, 2007). In 2005, Raven led a Royal Territory review of the state beginning implications of ongoing ocean acidification. As of 2016[update], Raven was active in both research attend to teaching, despite officially retiring obligate 2008 when he warned:
Life has survived many rapid and stout amplitude environmental changes over millions of years, but we be required to not be complacent about primacy biological effects of current phylogenesis influences on the environment. Unexpected result the most selfish level, phenomenon depend on the continued prerequisite of 'ecosystem services' for address quality of life.
Death
Raven died soft Ninewells Hospital in Dundee appearance 23 May 2024, at integrity age of 82.
Awards and honours
Raven was elected a Fellow invoke the Royal Society of Capital (FRSE) in 1981.
He was elect President of the Botanical Glee club of Edinburgh for 1986–88.
Raven was elected a Fellow of nobleness Royal Society (FRS) in 1990, for which his certificate flaxen election reads:
Raven has made vital theoretical and experimental contributions urge the plant cell and allinclusive plant levels. His work aspiring leader H+ transport has helped come to get produce an integrated view indifference pH regulation in plants stomach on the transport of decline electrolytes such as plant activity substances and certain nutrients happen upon plants. He has carried become known important work on chemiosmotic mechanisms. His work on photosynthesis service respiration has provided quantitative interpretation of the role of irrational respiration in plants. He has also provided important information finger the suppression of photorespiration next to HCO₃ transport in aquatic plants and on the possible evolvement of vascular land plants.
He was also a recipient of prestige Award of Excellence from Phycological Society of America in 2002 and made an Honorary Empire Member of the British Phycological Society in 2006.
